Cherishing the Gospel (CTG) 2026 is here upon us again! Over the last three years, I have had the pleasure of attending Cherishing the Gospel camp meetings: from Derby to Northampton. As we all know, camp is such a unique and precious time away from home to focus and brings opportunities to be blessed, and to bless others—the discipleship opportunities and memorable moments are certainly great!
But what about the days leading up to camp? I don’t mean the packing of materials, bags for your camp comfort or the careful organization of the thousand and one waivers. I mean, how are we spiritually preparing ourselves for camp? From my experience, the following things will help you get the most out of the CTG camp.
Before you pack a single bag towards camp, prepare your heart. Pray for those who will serve us in different ways at camp and minister to us in words and songs. Pray for yourself that your heart may be receptive and respond to the messages and have good fellowship with others.
Ask yourself what you hope to gain from camp. Is it rest? A breakthrough in a specific area of your walk with God? Having a focus helps you navigate the schedule with intention.
Once you arrive, there is the temptation to stick with familiar circles. CTG camp is an amazing opportunity to get outside your comfort zone by meeting someone new or non-regular TBP members. Make a purposeful plan to sit beside someone you don’t know well at meals or join conversations outside your circle. In summary, have conversations about the faith while you go about various activities at camp when the opportunity presents itself.
There are many ways to contribute, so expect to help. Lean into group activities, breakout sessions and slack times, even if you are not naturally outgoing. Stepping out of your comfort zone—whether it’s helping with setup or sharing during a small group reflection—is often where the most significant growth occurs.
Ask lots of questions, and write down your thoughts and experiences. CTG camp is full of fellow believers who are more than ready to answer your questions from the Scriptures. It is a school of the Word! A notepad to capture what you are taught and have learnt is essential to remembering it and looking back at it later, so bring a new journal book for camp.
Plan to disconnect from the pressures of work, school and household chores by giving yourself permission to be “unreachable”. This is often the hardest but the most rewarding step. In addition, keep distractions from your phone to a minimum. While you may need your phone to take notes or photos, try to keep your device stored away for all of the camp events. Being fully present for a spontaneous conversation or a moment of worship is impossible when your attention is divided by notifications.
The goal of CTG camp is not to come home with a perfect memory, but to return with a renewed spirit. When you prioritize relationships, stay open to the unexpected and keep your heart postured toward growth, you ensure that the impact of the weekend lasts long after you have unpacked your bags.
